IMPORTING

One of the first things people ask, is how much will importing cost and how do I organise it???
If you have the money the far easiest way it to let the person who you bought your Gypsy Horse through organise one of the major importers to bring your horse home. James Taylor, Coates Gypsy Horses, Rawlings Gypsy Cobs, Clononeen Irish Cobs, Meadow Farm etc. are all in the UK or Ireland and know what needs to be done for import and can organise it all. You can also buy your Gypsy Horse through these same people. Surrey Springs in Victoria, Australia can help streamline this process for you and make sure you get a quality Cob. American importers such as Black Forest Shires and Desert Jewel Gypsy Horses are also more than happy to help you as they buy regularly from breeders in the UK and/or Ireland at much reduced prices. Keep in mind that most of the sellers above although will have some listed online it is better to contact them saying what you are looking for as they all will have access to way more than listed.

Finding a few other people who wish to import a weanling or yearling will bring importing prices down quite substantually. Usually three weanlings can fit in a two horse space and four yearlings can fit in a three horse space.

Costs are changing all the time. IRT and Crispin Bennett offer similar prices however IRT have many costs not included such as vet costs and trucking between quarantine and airport. They are the two main flight importers. All quotes include quarantine and flights. Vet costs, agistment, fuel surchanges and trucking are the costs that will vary depending on where you buy from. Most sellers and importers communicate quite well and should be able to easily give you an idea of extra costs.

GST and insurance will be your responsibility, the importers can quote insurance for you at request. They will also let you know your GST costs. GST is payable on the total cost, including price of horse and cost of importing. All horses have to do the same quarantine regardless of age. This is three weeks in the UK and two weeks once here in Australia. The exception is pregnant mares, they will need to relocate to a secondary quarantine facility until foaling. Any farm may apply to be a secondary quarantine facility if meet certain requirements. Pregnant mares must not be more than 7 months in foal at the start of pre-export quarantine.

Basically your gypsy horse will probably cost from 2000 pounds (approx $5000AU) for a colt foal to 20,000 pounds or more for a top mature mare. For most good young fillies allow from $10,000 to $20,000 (AU) to buy. Filly prices are quite high at the moment. Importing costs can cost as low as $12,000 for a foal in with others up to $17000 or $18,000 for a mature horse. Sometimes more space may be needed though for an in foal mare. Then of course you have to add GST and Insurance. Yes it is an expensive venture!!! Basically if you have from $25,000 to $35,000 you should be able to import a top quality filly. The lower total costs will be if you can share a crate with others. I am happy to help in anyway possible or just to give opinions!
