A small percentage of gypsy horses have what is called a
moustache!! It is
usually the more heavily feathered horses but not always. Because
of this it is often called a *lucky moustache*, and
it is often said the best horses have this trait. I just love
the moustache, it seems to be mostly unique to the gypsy
horse. Probably because of years of selecting for more hair. Originally the moustache probably came
fron the Shire horse. Other places extra hair appears sometimes is a
line under the belly and the back of the back legs between the tail
and hock. This is usually called britching hair. Most often seen with a winter
coat but extra hairy horses can have it all year round. Some horses
also sport some very impressive beards. Both mares and stallions can have the extra
hair.
