A grey horse can start out as any colour at all. Grey
horses from birth get progressively lighter until they are white. The rate
at which this happens can vary considerably with individual horses. Some
horses are white before they are 10yo but others may still have a dark grey
colour at 10yo and only end up white in their last years. Foals that grey
early often have light rings around their eyes as their foal coat drops out.
Grey foals are usually born darker than the base coat would be if it were
not to go grey. A grey foal must have at least one grey parent.
Greys are very popular with the Gypsies and as grey
brings out the dapples that many horses have, they can look quite
spectacular in their prime years. The Gypsies tend to call any black based
coat with white hairs intermingled a *blue* horse. These can often be grey, sabino or even a
true roan. Blue is simply a descriptive term so if it matters to you what
colour it actually is make sure you read up on the different colour
characteristics to help better identify which.
