Sooty/Smutty

Sooty effects both red and black based horses by darkening the colour of certain areas of the horses. On dilute horses it is better seen because of the contrast. Sooty is usually more concentrated along the top of the horse and near the points but in extreme cases only the flanks might be left unaffected. I would love some photos of smutty Gypsy Horses if anyone has them!

This mare has only a minor smutty effect with

her flanks and back of her rump having the yellow

buckskin colour and the rest being a bit darker.

Ignoring the shadow under her belly this mare seems

 to have a little smutty on her rump and back legs
